May 13, 2015 – Dcode42 Founder Meagan Metzger spoke about small businesses and secrets to success in Washington DC at a panel hosted by Springboard Enterprises at the offices of Covington Burlington on Wednesday.
Joining panelists Maya Uppaluru from the US Department of Health and Human Services and Brendan Peter from CA Technologies, Metzger discussed some of her top pieces of advice for how to succeed in DC. This advice included ensuring companies identify and have an in-depth understanding of the specific government agencies and programs that have a use case for their solution. The panel agreed that doing upfront due diligence and learning the unique language of each agency is critical for any company hoping to successfully work with the federal government.
Other topics of discussion included lessons learned from some well-publicized failures, perspectives on working with larger companies as a startup, and some creative ways small businesses can collaborate with the government. Metzger in particular emphasized that there are many opportunities for small businesses to work with the federal government, whether through small business programs or partnering opportunities. However, not all partners are created equal, so businesses both large and small should choose their partners carefully.
Dcode42’s mission is to accelerate innovation in the federal government by providing technology companies with the skills and resources they need to successfully enter the federal space. With expert guidance and access to a vast array of vital resources, program participants will break through barriers to gain entry to the $79 billion IT budget of the US government, the largest consumer of products and services in the world.
